Bio
- My first encounter with the legendary Mr. Kuruvilla Jacob was when he interviewed me for Government of India Merit Scholarship. The letter of admission arrived a few weeks later. I joined HPS in class 8 in 1967 and assigned to 38 bedders. When I graduated in 1971 from 12th ISC, I was in 4-bedders. I owe it to my parents who thought it fit to enrol me in HPS! My previous school was in a 3-acre campus, so the 170 acres HPS was daunting at first! It was initially hard to break into the student groups as they were together from Primary. But once that difficult phase was over, I made some enduring friendships.
- Many wonder what makes HPS so special? When I reflect on it, I realize that it is not the host of activities we had in addition to academics - carpentry, farming, aeromodelling, NCC, Scouts, dramatics, music,Horse Riding, photography, clay modelling, school band, art, debating, to name a few – but it was the sheer quality of heart and mind of our teachers. They not only taught us in the classroom alone, but were with us on the games fields, taught us how to be graceful at the dining table, gave us religious talks on Sunday mornings, accompanied us on picnics and tours. Many lived on campus. A true modern gurukul system!
- I made the journey in the unreserved railway compartment to Delhi and then to BITS Pilani with Anjaneyulu, Sunil Handa and (I think) P L N Prabhu. Learnt that BITS Pilani had a unified admission scheme that cannot assure me a seat in Electronics till the third year! I left without informing my parents. I ‘hid’ in Narasimha’s house in Delhi for a few days and returned home. I ended up in R V College of Engineering in Bangalore and was happy to see Sushil Bhavnani and Vinai from HPS there
- .Met Kushroo Talathi at the Bhopal SSB interview in 1976. Neither of us joined Navy.
- After a short stint in GE Medical after college, I was on my own - Medical Imaging, Analytical Instrumentation, Surface Coating plants et al. In late 1990s drifted accidentally into private equity and raised US $ 35 MN for two Hyderabad companies.
- Set up an offshore facility for an Oakland, CA, Tech Support company and most recently was heading the Indian ops for a Fremont, CA based renewable energy company with manufacturing operations in Pune. This provided lots of travel opportunities. Semi-retired now and take it slow and easy and savour seeing our kids blossom in their life and careers and taking care of my parents.
- I had the unique privilege of serving our alma mater that we owe so much to. Was a member of the Board of Governors from 1999 for several years.
- Was Secretary and Treasurer of the Hyderabad Public Society. Restoring the Shaheen Block as the Chairman of Works Committee of the Board was very satisfying.
Family
- My younger brother was in HPS Begumpet till 7th and then moved to HPS Ramanthapur, where he was the Head Boy. Both our kids went to HPS Begumpet. My daughter was the Head Girl in 2005. So, the bond grew tronger!
- Usha and I were married in 1981 and are blessed to have two adoring kids we are very proud of. Our daughter Dr. Sravya graduated in Dermatology from Bengaluru where she currently practices and is married to Tarun, an industrialist and restaurateur. Our son Kaustubh graduated from Texas A&M in Engg Systems Management and works in the USA.
- With Nitin Dalvi and Sharoukanti in Inter-house competitions School Volleyball Team, probably circa 1970
